Philippines the Social Networking Capital of the World

Once the Philippines was branded as the 'Texting Capital of the World' and now the Philippines is also called as the 'Social Networking capital of the World', according the the 24/7 Wall Street blog research. The research showed that the Philippines top the Facebook peneration (usage per population).

The Philippines top the list with 93.9% followed by Israel with 91% (population is 7,587,000). Most of the top ten comes from Southeast Asia and Latin America where communication and economy is booming.

In the Philippines Facebook is even popular than Google and top 8th in Twitter with 16.1% penetration.  Social networking became a hit in the Philippines because they want to be keep in touch with friends and love ones thus  social networking site such as Facebook makes communications easy. Anyway the Philippiines are among the first where Facebook introduced its service

If you go to Malls, Coffee shop, and schools everyone is Facebooking where free hotspots are available. Another factor which I think contributed to the success of social networking in this country is cheap mobile service. If you have a smartphone you can have unlimited surfing for 50pesos/day or roughly $1.15/day.

Before Facebook, Friendster was the first to hit in the country followed by MySpace and other SNS but in 2008/2009 Facebook became a hit due Facebok games, and chat support. You don't need to sign up with your IMs or E-Mails because Facebook has it all.

Personally I use Facebook to keep in touch with friends and classmates plus using it to follow News and Events same goes with Twitter.

According to this article Jakarta is the Facebook capital of the world with 17.5million users.

Osama Bin Laden Facebook spam - Do not click those links!

After the major success of the US NAVY SEALS in raiding the hideout of Osama Bin Laden resulting to his demise. The world's attention is now on the real proof about his death and spammers in Facebook is exploiting this curiosity. So far I saw two new Osama Bin Laden Facebook spam.

The First Spam is the Osama Bin Laden Execution Video and the second spam is the Picture of Bin laden Dead.

As far I know and seen on TV,  there's no video of the raid and this was confirmed by the National Security Adviser in CNN.

I hope Facebook user will not click this links because it is pretty annoying popping out in the chatbox.

Facebook is currently infested by spammers who bluntly, hijack accounts to spread their advertising ads. This morning one of my facebook friend's account has been hijacked and  keep posting numerous links about "FREE FACEBOOK T SHIRT - FREE HOME DELIVERY".

I have no choice but to hide her account on my news feed just to keep my wall clean. If clicked you will be part of their network spam and you too will keep posting this links. So be careful not to click this and if you are a victim try to look for the app that spread this spam, delete the app and better change your password as well.

All this time I blog about Facebook spams and fair enough I am getting good traffic about this kind of topic. The reason why I blog about those spam is to let Facebook users become aware of what they are clicking and the potential danger if your account is compromised.

This past few days I have not seen any spam but tonight a new spam emerged. The BLOODIEST Fight EVER in UFC - BANNED FROM TV! 

Actually I almost clicked the link but I noticed that it has no comment and like buttons. If so happen that you see this wall post do not click the said link.

Social Networking Views - a new malicious script?

Minutes after posting my tutorial on how get rid of the OMG Watch the Nastiest Girl Fight Video Ever! there's a new malicious script again keep popping on my notification. Though I have not tried getting the code since I am not on my test machine, this involves most likely a Cross-Site Scripting or XSS. Never to drag the code to your browser, if you do you will automatically download the malicious code.

Facebook will never make such application, if they do they will automatically integrate it to their site and will not undergo third-party installation and propagate without user permission.

If you are paranoid you scan your system against malicious code. If you do not have an Anti Virus download the Microsoft Security Essential and MalwareBytes. Both a free and they are good!

A word of caution, never click any link especially shortlinks coming from unknown sources. It may not do any harm to you but expect spam emails.

Social Networking Spamming - a new trend of spamming. Yesterday I blogged on how stop Facebook spam that sends  pops-up chat messages with malicious links and today another spam trick appeared.

This is a wall to wall spamming, the compromised account is sending wall messages about Facebook Sponsored Weight Loss Product. I am very sure that the owner is not the one sending those messages.

As I checked the account of my friend, everyone on his friends list received the spam message.

If you received this kind of messages DO NOT CLICK THE LINK and check your apps list and Delete the said App. Also try to change your password just to make sure.

How to Stop Facebook Chat spam - receiving chat with malicious links

If you noticed recently that you are receiving Facebook chat with links on it? This are viral spam. The person who is sending you actually have no idea that he's sending such messages because his/her account has been hijacked.  Once click you will post the same message on your wall and you will also sending this via chat box.

The account can be hijacked by Phishers and if you accept application that is malicious. Some uses the "like pages", once you like certain quotes for example, inside of that, is a link directing to phishing site  once clicked it will automatically gather your information especially if you have not secured your facebook account.  Another is installing unknown apps, this apps also gather your account details and most of the recent hijacked account was through this method.

So how to stop  Facebook chat spam?

1. If you see a link post that says "click this",  "check this out", pornographic in nature post, chances are that this post are malicious. So do not click.
2. If you receive a chat with unknown links from a friend that says "click this",  "check this out", pornographic in nature post, chances are that this post are malicious. So do not click.
3. If your account has been compromised, check your application list here and delete the unknown application.
4. Change your password after deleting the applications and change your password regularly.
5. Use your common sense - don't just click and click...

Facebook acquired Snaptu

Facebook is expanding its mobile services by acquiring the American-Israeli firm Snaptu. Their technology enables 'feature phones' - non smartphones to easily access Facebook or Twitter.

This one of the 2011 expansion plans of Facebook to penetrate the mobile social networking, with Snaptu it is easy for Facebook to gain more subscriber. A great strategy from Facebook since feature phones make up 80%  of the total handset in the world and only 20% are smartphones. Analysts say that the acquisition will help the social network better penetrate developing markets where smartphones are less affordable and ‘feature phones’ are the norm.

Accoring to the report Snaptu has a value at around $40 to $70million USD. Company blogged: “We soon decided that working as part of the Facebook team offered the best opportunity to keep accelerating the pace of our product development."

Henri Moissinac, Facebook’s Head of Mobile Business, said at the time: “We want to have every user in every market using Facebook– we’re investing in smartphones and at the same time as in mass market phones because we believe with great features and great integrations, every phone can become sociable.”

Facebook ranked No.1

According to Google’s AdPlanner stats, Facebook is the number one most-visited destination on the web. Weighing in at an unfathomably heavy 570 billion page views and 540 million users, the ubiquitous social network outranks every other non-Google site, taking more than 35% of all web traffic measured excluding Google.com and Youtube.com.

Among the top 10 only Wikipedia and Mozilla that remain ad-free.

When it comes to non-Facebook social media properties, Twitter ranks 18th with 5.4 billion page views, Flickr is 31st with 1.8 billion views and LinkedIn sits in 56th place at 1.7 billion views.

And the usual blogging sites make appearances, too. Blogspot is in 7th place, WordPress in 12th and Blogger in 53rd.

How to: Sync Twitter with Facebook

I've been using apps that will sync my tweets to my facebook status but facebook is constantly changing their codes so that this apps will become ineffective. I even tried the first official twitter app but since then I get log in error. Few third party application like SELECTIVE TWEETS which you can selectively choose your tweet to facebook stat by adding #fb to your tweets.

Just today, when I was looking for some twitter widget for WP and blogger I was able to click "GOODIES", that can be found in the footer of twitter...funny thing is I haven't seen it if not through some googling...:)

So here is the simple walk through on how to set it up...

1. First go to twitter.com
2. Go to GOODIES at the footer of the site.
3. Click Widgets,Facebook

4. Click the Facebook Application link and Install the Application.


Now you can tweet from inside facebook by going to the application you just installed. apps.facebook.com/twitter or from twitter.com

I hope this tutorial will help you synchronize your tweets to your facebook status.
