Ubuntu 'Natty Narwhal' (11.04) - released

After blogging about Panasonic's lay off announcement, its time to give some good news. Ubuntu 'Natty Narwhal' (11.04) is released! This is the first desktop version of Ubuntu to have Unity Desktop. It is designed to make more efficient use of space given the limited screen size of netbooks, including, for example, a vertical application switcher. Unlike GNOME, Xfce or KDE Plasma Desktop, Unity is not a collection of applications but designed to be used with existing GTK+ programs.

The main feature of the new version is the Unity desktop. It uses a hardware acceleration for rendering and the downside of this is that not all machine supports this rendering technology. Fortunately, Natty Narwhal still have the classic environment "GNOME" and can be activated during the log in.

Another noticeable changed is the music player, Ubuntu used Rhythmbox as the default player, in this new version it uses Banshee.

After I finished downloading my Ubuntu copy, I will test and write a full review about it. If you'd like to test the new version drop by to Ubuntu and download the version 11.04.

Battle of Browsers: Chrome vs. Internet Explorer vs. Firefox

Google, Microsoft and Mozilla produced the best stable browsers today. Recently Both IE9 and FireFox 4 has been released. But who is really the best among the rest? As an ordinary user we can't really notice the difference but those guys from CNET did some experiment in an identical environment.

The browsers are tested in their HTML 5 and Javascript performance along with boost times and memory perfomance.

XAMPP - Apache won't start

If you are using XAMPP to run a local web server and it so happen that you can not start the Apache Web Server this its quite frustrating right? If you run Apache it will start then immediately will stop?

The culprit is Skype! Skype by default uses port 80 and 443 for its incoming connection thus conflicting Apache default port 80.

The solution for this is to change the default port of Skype.

Go to Skype > Options >  Advanced Settings >  Connections > Uncheck (Use port 80 and 443 as alternatives for incoming connections). After doing this you can now run Apache with no problem.

Download Mozilla Firefox 4 - now!

I am waiting for the official release of the latest version of Firefox 4, it's March 22 and  Mozilla download page is still offering the 3.6.15 and the RC version., just now Lifehacker posted some links for the official version for Windows, Mac and Linux.

Mozilla team is still propagating their server with the new Firefox 4. Their FTP site can not handle the traffic if they will immediately provide download.

Download Windows 7 SP1 via Microsoft Download Center

Starting today, Windows 7 service pack is available to everyone via the Microsoft Download Center . The service pack will also be available via Windows Update.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is an important update that includes previously released security, performance, and stability updates for Windows 7. Additional improvements to services and features in Windows 7, such as improved reliability when connecting to HDMI audio devices, printing using the XPS Viewer, and restoring previous folders in Windows Explorer after restarting.

Microsoft Windows 8 roadmap leaked

Its no longer a secret that Microsoft is currently developing the Windows 8. A recent Windows 8 development plan  leaked and ZDNet revealed the Microsoft Windows 8 internal roadmap.Windows 8 is expected to be release in 2012.

Based on the roadmap Windows 8 is currently in the M3 stage and according WinRumors:

Milestone 3 work should take around five months, assuming it has to go through the same coding, integration and then fixing and lockdown stages as M2. The software giant has compiled a number of Milestone 2 builds recently ready for the final M2 build that will be distributed internally and externally to the company’s closest partners. Microsoft compiled 6.2.7947.0.winmain_win8m2_escrow.110218-1608 on Friday following a number of Windows 8 builds over the past couple of weeks.

Microsoft only reveal there Windows logo last CES 2011 in Las Vegas but no further details was announced.

MiniBin - empty your trashbin in system tray

I am not really a fan of having desktop icons cluttering on my desktop screen. So I delete all my icons and put them in a dock. In my case I have a DELL Dock on my Dell Laptop. But deleting Recycle  Bin one major disadvantage is we always forget that we have too my files needed to be deleted.

One tool I found is MiniBin, this enables you to have a Recycle Bin on your system tray. With a mouse click you will be able to empty your Recycle Bin. A different icon will be showed if you have any files that need to be erased from Recycle Bin.

Windows 7 SP1 release on Feb 22, 2011

The long wait is over! Microsoft just confirmed the public release of Wndows 7 Sp1 (Service Pack 1) on February 22, 2011. Basically the service pack is just a collection of Windows update plus some additional addons. In the case of Windows 7 most of the service pack contents is already provided via Windows update (if you regularly update your system).



For Windows 2008 they added Remote FX and Dynamic Memory which are two new virtualization features enabled in Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

Windows 7 and Server 2008 schedule of release:

•  February 16th Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 will be available for MSDN and TechNet Subscribers as well as Volume License customers.

• February 22nd, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 will become generally available for folks to download via the Microsoft Download Center and available on Windows Update.

Firefox Announces iPhone App

Mozilla has announced plans to launch a free iPhone Application that will let you access most of your Firefox browser data on the iPhone. Called Firefox Home, the native iPhone app gives you access to your Firefox browser history, bookmarks, and Awesome Bar. Home will also sync any currently open tabs from Firefox on your desktop to the iPhone, giving you "on the go" instant access to important Web pages.

According to the official Mozilla Blog the app will be submitted by June. At that point Apple will either approve or reject it. Firefox Home is designed for iPhone and Ipod Touch. No announcement yet for the iPad.

Firefox Home is not a full pledged browser like Opera Mini or Safari. Apple prohibits third-party applications from including their own rendering engine and JavaScript interpreter, according to Mozilla. Instead, applications must use the iPhone's technology for these processes, which basically means Firefox's underlying technology can't be used on the iPhone. Opera got around this problem by rendering Web pages on its servers and then sending the finished page to the iPhone. cnet

Firefox Home will also be a one-way channel, meaning you can send your desktop browsing information to your iPhone, but you will not be able to send data from your iPhone to desktop versions of Firefox.

One solution to the one-way data problem would be to build a JavaScript bookmarklet for Safari for iPhone that would let you sync your iPhone browsing data with Firefox; however, Mozilla says it has no plans to do this at the moment.

Microsoft will end its sales of Windows Xp (experience) both OEM and Corporate in the end of June, despite some reluctance of business and individuals about moving to Vista. With the success of Ubuntu and Leopard for Macs, Windows community did not get excited that much for the coming of Vista, maybe people are not really excited since they have computers that can not run Vista just like me. If Vista can run as much lower system requirement we will adopt the new operating system, but when it came it only gave frustrations, high resources are required, few drivers and have hardware issue.

Let us support XP by giving our vote.
